The Bachelor of Sport Business (Leadership) is a specialist undergraduate degree that sits at the intersection of business management and the sport industry. It equips students with a comprehensive understanding of how sporting organisations operate, generate revenue, attract sponsorships, manage athletes, coordinate events, and compete on both domestic and global stages. The program blends core business disciplines — including finance, marketing, law, and strategic management — with sport-specific content such as governance, athlete representation, sport media, and facility management. Students are exposed to real-world challenges through industry-connected learning, preparing them to operate professionally across the full spectrum of the sport sector.
The degree is designed for students who are passionate about sport but want to build a career behind the scenes — in the boardroom, at the administrative level, or in commercial and community development roles. It suits recent school leavers as well as those already working in sport-related fields who wish to formalise their knowledge and advance their careers. Graduates are prepared to manage various aspects of professional and non-profit sports organisations, athlete representation, event coordination, and more, with insights into the administrative, legal, and financial dimensions of sport.
Employers of graduates span a wide range of organisations including professional sporting clubs (AFL, NRL, A-League, NBL, Super Netball), national and state sport governing bodies, Olympic and Paralympic committees, local councils, sport marketing agencies, event management companies, stadium operators, sport media outlets, and community sport organisations. The course also opens pathways into sport consulting, athlete management agencies, and sport-focused roles within corporate sponsors and broadcasters.
Australia's sport industry is booming. Over 26.2 million fans attended professional sporting events in 2024 — a 9.0% increase from 2023 — and revenue from sport and recreation facilities has grown at an annualised rate of 4.2% over the past five years, reaching $2.4 billion in 2024–25. Amusement, fitness, and sports centre management roles are projected to grow by around 17% over the coming decade (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2024), yet the industry consistently faces a skills gap in professionally trained business and leadership talent. Graduates who combine genuine business acumen with deep sport-sector knowledge are in high demand, and this degree provides exactly that blend — giving students a clear competitive edge in a crowded market.
Beyond domestic opportunity, the globalisation of sport means Australian-trained professionals are well positioned to pursue roles internationally. The rapid growth of women's sport, the rise of e-sports, expanding digital media rights, and increasing commercial investment in grassroots and community sport are all creating new career pathways that simply did not exist a decade ago. A Bachelor of Sport Business (Leadership) provides the strategic thinking, leadership capability, and practical experience needed to not only enter this industry, but to lead it.
For domestic students, most providers require completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (Year 12) or equivalent, with a minimum ATAR or equivalent selection rank. English is typically required at Units 3 and 4, with a minimum study score of 20 in standard English or 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL). However, many sport-focused providers in this field offer non-ATAR entry pathways, meaning applicants can be considered on the basis of alternative criteria rather than a fixed ATAR score — making the course more accessible to mature-age students and career changers.
Alternative entry pathways commonly accepted include completion of a VET/TAFE Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Certificate IV in a relevant field (such as sport and recreation, business, or event management); one year of full-time higher education study at a recognised Australian institution; or demonstrated work and life experience in the sport industry (typically a minimum of five years for mature-age applicants). Some providers may also accept a completed Big Picture Education Portfolio. Applicants who do not initially meet bachelor-level entry standards may be able to first complete a Diploma or Associate Degree in Sport Business and then articulate into the bachelor's degree, with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available.
For international students, English language proficiency is required, with most providers accepting an IELTS overall band score of 6.0 to 6.5 (with no individual component below 6.0), or equivalent scores in TOEFL, PTE, or other accepted tests. Some programs also require applicants to attend an interview and provide evidence of relevant qualifications or experience. All domestic applicants must meet minimum computer literacy standards, and for placements that involve working with children, a Working with Children Check will typically be required before commencing the course.
This course may be offered in different study modes depending on the university, campus location, course structure and student type. Students should check the available delivery mode before applying, as not every study option is available at every institution.
On-campus study is the traditional mode of delivery where students attend classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars at the university campus. This option may suit students who prefer face-to-face learning, access to campus facilities, networking with classmates, practical workshops, group projects and direct engagement with academic staff.
Some universities may offer programs fully online or with online subject options. Online study can be attractive for students who need flexibility due to work, family, location or other commitments. Online study may suit domestic students, working professionals or students who want to study from outside Australia.
Hybrid or blended study usually combines online learning with some on-campus classes, workshops, intensive sessions or practical components. This mode may suit students who want flexibility but still want some face-to-face interaction. The exact structure varies between institutions.
Programs in Australia may have different intake structures depending on the university. The most common intake systems are semester, trimester and block mode.
Many Australian universities follow a two-semester academic calendar. The main intakes are commonly Semester 1 (around February or March) and Semester 2 (around July). Semester-based study usually allows students to complete a set number of subjects over approximately 12 to 14 weeks.
Some universities use a trimester system, which generally provides three study periods a year — around February/March, June/July and October/November. Trimester study may provide more flexibility and may help some students complete their course faster.
Some institutions may offer selected subjects or programs in block mode, where students focus on one subject at a time over a shorter, more intensive teaching period. Block mode may suit students who prefer concentrated learning or working professionals managing study around employment.
Some online or professionally focused programs may offer more frequent start dates or flexible entry points throughout the year. Students should not assume that every course has monthly or multiple intakes — availability depends on the institution, course structure and student type.
Graduates of a Bachelor of Sport Business (Leadership) enter a broad and dynamic career landscape that spans professional sport, community organisations, corporate sectors, and government agencies. With sport at the centre of Australian culture and the industry experiencing sustained commercial growth, qualified sport business professionals are in strong demand across roles in management, marketing, events, athlete services, media, and beyond. Graduates can pursue careers with professional clubs, national and state sporting bodies, event management companies, stadium operators, sport sponsorship agencies, local councils, and increasingly in areas such as e-sports, sport technology, and women's sport administration.
