Some providers require applicants to have completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction, or a related post-secondary qualification. All students must satisfy a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment at ACSF Level 4, and many providers require a pre-training review or interview to assess suitability. For site-based practical components, students are typically required to obtain a White Card (General Construction Induction Card) before commencing any site visits or field activities.

For international students, English language proficiency is generally required at a minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall (or equivalent PTE Academic 50), with test results no older than two years. For university-level diploma programs, the entry standard is typically completion of an Australian Year 12 qualification (or equivalent), or an AQF Level 3 Certificate or higher from a registered training organisation. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available at all major providers, allowing experienced construction professionals to have their existing skills formally assessed and credited toward the qualification, potentially reducing the time required to complete the course.
