Students are expected to have some background in mathematics at a senior high school level, and physics is often assumed knowledge or strongly recommended. Some providers administer a Maths Readiness Test prior to enrolment to assess whether students need to undertake a bridging or support mathematics program. Students may also qualify through completion of a Foundation Studies program (with a minimum GPA requirement, often 5.5 or higher), a Tertiary Enabling Program, demonstrated work experience and a personal competency statement, or — in some cases — a STAT Multiple Choice score. Alternative entry pathways such as ADF service records are also recognised by certain providers. Year 12 Mathematics (equivalent) is typically a prerequisite for all applicants, with assumed knowledge in Chemistry, Biology, or Physics also desirable depending on the specialisation chosen. International students must demonstrate English language proficiency, with a minimum IELTS overall band score of 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent in PTE, TOEFL, or Cambridge English) required by most providers. Students who do not meet the English requirement may be able to complete a preparatory Academic English or University English Entry Course (UEEC) before commencing their diploma studies.
