As of March 2024, the Australian Government increased the minimum IELTS equivalent score for student visa holders undertaking ELICOS courses to 5.0, meaning students must demonstrate at least this level of proficiency before commencing EAP study.
Most providers also require applicants to be at least 17–18 years of age at commencement, though some junior programs accept students from age 16. Academic entry requirements are generally minimal — successful completion of Year 11 schooling or an equivalent level in the applicant's home country is often sufficient. There are no subject-specific prerequisites, portfolio requirements, or work experience requirements for EAP enrolment. Applicants who do not have a formal English test score may be placed via an institution's own online or in-person English placement test administered at the commencement of enrolment.
International students studying in Australia must hold an appropriate student visa (typically a Subclass 500 Student Visa) for courses longer than three months. The EAP course must be delivered by a CRICOS-registered provider. Students already enrolled at a university or TAFE who do not meet the direct entry English requirement for their degree may also be offered a conditional admission to an EAP pathway program, with direct entry into their degree or diploma upon successful completion at the required level and grade.
