Students enrolled on a student visa may also work part-time in Australia for up to 20 hours per week during term time, offering real-world practice in environments such as retail, hospitality, and administration. Completion of upper-intermediate or advanced General English levels can serve as a direct pathway to VET qualifications, diploma programs, or undergraduate study at Australian universities.

General English ELICOS courses are among the most accessible programs available to international students in Australia. There are no formal academic entry requirements for General English courses at any level — students do not need prior qualifications, and those wishing to complete all levels from the beginning do not require any prior knowledge of English. The primary requirement for international students is that they must be 18 years of age or older at the time of course commencement, hold an appropriate Australian student visa (or a visitor visa for courses up to 13 weeks), and have completed at least the equivalent of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent secondary schooling) at many providers.

Before commencing, students typically complete a free placement assessment test — such as the Oxford Placement Test, an internal institutional test, or a short interview — to determine the most appropriate starting level.
