Students who wish to begin at the Elementary level do not require any prior knowledge of English — the course is designed to take students from absolute beginner level through to advanced proficiency. Students entering at higher levels typically complete a placement test (such as the Oxford Placement Test or an in-house assessment covering reading, writing, grammar, and speaking) to determine the most appropriate starting level. Some providers may also conduct a short interview or oral assessment as part of the enrolment process.
Most ELICOS providers require students to be at least 16 to 18 years of age at the time of course commencement, and international students must hold an appropriate Australian visa — typically a Student Visa (Subclass 500) for courses exceeding 12–13 weeks in duration. Students on a Tourist Visa may study ELICOS for up to 13 weeks without a Student Visa. There is no IELTS or equivalent English test score required to enrol in a standalone General English ELICOS course; however, students who already hold an IELTS score (or results from TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, or OET) may submit these to assist in level placement. Providers registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) must be chosen by international students on a Student Visa.
Students who progress to Upper Intermediate or Advanced level may use their ELICOS completion certificate as evidence of English language proficiency for entry into VET (Certificate III–Diploma level) courses or as a pathway toward university entrance via an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Successful completion of an ELICOS level generally requires a minimum attendance of 80% and a passing score of around 60% across all assessments.
