Most programs require students to be in good academic standing, which typically means maintaining a satisfactory academic record, having no outstanding academic misconduct matters, and having completed a minimum number of credit points at their home institution before departure — usually at least one or two full semesters of study. A minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or Grade Point Average (GPA) may be required, often equivalent to a Credit average or higher, to demonstrate academic readiness for independent international study. Students enrolled in three-year degrees typically undertake the exchange in their second year, while those in four-year programs may go in their second or third year.

International students who are already studying in Australia on a student visa (Subclass 500) must be aware that travelling to the Sarawak campus may affect their visa conditions, and they will need to obtain a Malaysian student pass or appropriate visa for their time abroad. For students moving from Sarawak to Australia, a Student Visa (Subclass 500) in the non-award sector is required for the six-month duration, along with a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
