The Master of Social Impact and Not-for-Profit Management (Extension) is a postgraduate qualification designed for professionals who are passionate about driving meaningful change through purpose-led organisations. The course reflects best practice, current issues, and emerging trends in not-for-profit and social enterprise management, equipping students with the advanced skills needed to lead, innovate, and manage organisations with a social purpose at their heart. Students gain expertise across grant writing, fundraising, volunteer management, advocacy, strategic leadership, and social impact measurement, as well as a thorough understanding of the social economy and its broader economic and political context. The Extension version of the degree provides additional depth through elective subjects and extended professional practice components, typically making it a longer qualification than the standard master's.
This qualification is particularly relevant to policy-makers, senior managers, and chief executives of social economy, community, public, and third sector organisations. It also suits professionals seeking to apply business and management principles to governments, businesses, and social ventures — creating economic and social value simultaneously. Employers of graduates span the full breadth of the not-for-profit and for-purpose sectors, including registered charities, community service organisations, government agencies, international aid and development bodies, health and disability organisations, environmental advocacy groups, arts and cultural institutions, professional associations, and corporate social responsibility divisions of large businesses.
Australia's not-for-profit sector is one of the nation's largest employers outside government, with charities alone providing paid work to approximately 1.47 million Australians, representing around 10.5% of the total workforce — supported by an additional 3.5 million volunteers. The sector is experiencing sustained demand for skilled leaders and managers, yet faces pronounced labour shortages driven by an ageing workforce, tighter budgets, and fierce competition for qualified talent. This skills gap makes postgraduate-qualified professionals with specialist knowledge in social impact management highly sought after. Many NFP roles offer competitive remuneration — particularly in senior leadership, health, disability, and education services — with the added advantage of salary packaging and FBT exemptions that can significantly increase take-home pay.
The sector's growth is being driven by increasing government investment in social services, rising community expectations around accountability and impact measurement, and the growing prominence of social enterprise as a model for sustainable, mission-driven work. Graduates of this qualification are well-positioned to step into leadership roles that shape how organisations deliver meaningful outcomes for communities across Australia and internationally. With CEO salaries in the NFP sector rising consistently year-on-year and the human services workforce projected to grow strongly, there has never been a better time to build specialist expertise in this field.
To be eligible for admission to a master's-level qualification in this field, applicants typically need to have completed an Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or an overseas equivalent, with more than 75% of all subjects completed at pass level (conceded passes are generally not included in this calculation). Most programs accept applicants from any undergraduate discipline, meaning students do not need a business or social science background to be eligible. However, some institutions may give preference to applicants with relevant work experience in the not-for-profit, community services, government, or social enterprise sectors. Applicants who do not meet standard entry requirements may be directed to a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the field as a pathway into the master's program.
For international students or Australian applicants with international qualifications, English language proficiency must be demonstrated through an approved test. Typical minimum requirements are: IELTS Academic — an overall score of 6.5 with a writing band of at least 6.0; TOEFL iBT — an overall score of 79 with a writing score of 21; Pearson PTE — an overall score of 58 with a writing score of 50; or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency — an overall score of 176 with a writing score of 169. Some institutions may also accept completion of an approved pre-sessional English program as an alternative. As with all postgraduate courses, meeting minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee an offer of a place, and applications are assessed on a competitive basis.
This course may be offered in different study modes depending on the university, campus location, course structure and student type. Students should check the available delivery mode before applying, as not every study option is available at every institution.
On-campus study is the traditional mode of delivery where students attend classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars at the university campus. This option may suit students who prefer face-to-face learning, access to campus facilities, networking with classmates, practical workshops, group projects and direct engagement with academic staff.
Some universities may offer programs fully online or with online subject options. Online study can be attractive for students who need flexibility due to work, family, location or other commitments. Online study may suit domestic students, working professionals or students who want to study from outside Australia.
Hybrid or blended study usually combines online learning with some on-campus classes, workshops, intensive sessions or practical components. This mode may suit students who want flexibility but still want some face-to-face interaction. The exact structure varies between institutions.
Programs in Australia may have different intake structures depending on the university. The most common intake systems are semester, trimester and block mode.
Many Australian universities follow a two-semester academic calendar. The main intakes are commonly Semester 1 (around February or March) and Semester 2 (around July). Semester-based study usually allows students to complete a set number of subjects over approximately 12 to 14 weeks.
Some universities use a trimester system, which generally provides three study periods a year — around February/March, June/July and October/November. Trimester study may provide more flexibility and may help some students complete their course faster.
Some institutions may offer selected subjects or programs in block mode, where students focus on one subject at a time over a shorter, more intensive teaching period. Block mode may suit students who prefer concentrated learning or working professionals managing study around employment.
Some online or professionally focused programs may offer more frequent start dates or flexible entry points throughout the year. Students should not assume that every course has monthly or multiple intakes — availability depends on the institution, course structure and student type.
Graduates of this qualification are equipped to pursue careers across the full spectrum of Australia's not-for-profit, social enterprise, government, and corporate social responsibility sectors. Career options include managing non-government or not-for-profit organisations, working in corporate social responsibility, or in government roles that interface with community organisations across areas such as social and community welfare, environmental advocacy, arts and culture, fundraising, education, international aid and development, and professional associations. As skilled leaders with specialist knowledge in social impact and purpose-driven management, graduates are in demand across metropolitan and regional Australia, as well as internationally.
