Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design

The RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design at Thames International College reflects the role of an individual working as a senior civil works designer or a para-professional designer who supports professional engineers. They perform tasks that are broad, specialised, complex and technical, including strategic areas and initiating activities.

Graduates are responsible for the design of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client's site requirements, and are required to demonstrate self-directed application of theoretical and technical knowledge and to initiate solutions to technical problems or management requirements. The qualification is made up of 12 units — 5 core and 7 electives — covering program risk management, team effectiveness, safe design principles to control WHS risks, managing civil works design processes, establishing and maintaining a quality system, business planning, innovation and continuous improvement, detailed design of motorways and interchanges, detailed traffic analysis, leadership in the supervision of diverse work teams, and project time and quality management.

The course runs for 104 weeks in total (80 study weeks delivered as 8 terms of 10 weeks, plus 24 weeks of holidays) at the College's North Sydney campus. Delivery is face-to-face in a classroom-based setting combined with distance learning — 14 hours of classroom training per week plus 6 hours of structured distance training — with about 5 hours of additional unsupervised study expected each week.
