Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design

The RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design at Victorian College of Education Australia (VCEA) reflects the role of an individual working as a senior civil works designer or para-professional designer who supports professional engineers. Graduates perform tasks that are broad, specialised, complex and technical, including strategic areas and initiating activities. They are responsible for the design of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client's site requirements, and are required to demonstrate self-directed application of theoretical and technical knowledge and to initiate solutions to technical problems or management requirements. The qualification requires 12 units — 5 core units and 7 electives — covering applying safe design principles to control WHS risks, establishing and maintaining a quality system, managing team effectiveness, managing civil works design processes, managing program risk, managing project time, providing leadership in the supervision of diverse work teams, preparing detailed geotechnical design, preparing detailed design of urban roads, preparing detailed traffic analysis, and managing project procurement.

Delivery is face to face in the classroom at VCEA's Queen Street campus in Melbourne, with assessment through classroom activity, projects, case studies and assignments. The full course runs for 52 weeks full time including holidays and orientation; students who have completed the RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design at VCEA need study only 44 weeks. Tuition is $25,000, plus a non-refundable enrolment fee of $450 and a materials fee of $1,450. Individuals may enter with one year of vocational experience providing design support for professional engineers together with the RII50520 Diploma. After achieving the qualification, graduates could progress to higher education.
