Yes, this course requires an audition for entry. You can book an audition through Melbourne Polytechnic's website. If you prefer not to attend in person, you can alternatively submit a performance ePortfolio.
Students have access to rehearsal rooms equipped with drum kits, piano, PA systems and amplifiers, as well as music-focused computer labs. Delivery also takes place in performance venues, a studio, and an electronic music lab.
For local students, the government subsidised tuition fee is $13,400 and the non-subsidised fee is $18,950. A maximum annual amenities fee of $260 applies, bringing the total to $13,660 (subsidised) or $19,210 (non-subsidised). For international students, the fee is $21,280 per year or $10,640 per semester. Fees are subject to change and are indicative only.
Graduates can seek employment in the music industry as a solo artist, performer in a band, band leader, musical director, music teacher, arranger, producer or agent. Graduates interested in further study can also gain credit towards Melbourne Polytechnic's Bachelor of Songwriting and Music Production degree.
The course runs for 32 weeks across 2 semesters and covers performance through individual lessons, small bands, larger ensembles, workshops and performance platforms, culminating in a forty-minute recital in a Melbourne venue of your choice. Performance skills are supported by music craft skills in theory, aural, improvisation, reading, keyboard, arranging, composition and technology. Assessment includes observation of students' performance, oral questioning, written activities, and projects/portfolios of student work.
