Common Questions
The total estimated program tuition fees for 2026 are AU$159,360 for both the Instrument and Instructor streams. This breaks down as: Year 1 — $36,480 theory fees + $41,320 practical fees = $77,800; Year 2 — $36,480 theory fees + $45,080 practical fees = $81,560. The program is only offered as a full-fee paying program. Domestic students may be eligible to defer payment using a FEE-HELP loan, with the 2026 HELP loan limit for this program being $186,544 (a 20% loan fee applies). International student fees are AU$79,680 per year (2026 annual). Fees are adjusted annually by up to 7.5% each year.
The minimum ATAR for entry is 60.30 for the Point Cook campus and 60.60 for the Bendigo campus. Entry is competitive and applicants are ranked in order of merit. You may be eligible to receive adjustment factors of up to 28 aggregate points, which include subject adjustments (e.g., a study score of 25 in Maths or Science subjects equals 2 aggregate points each, up to a maximum of 8 points), equity access schemes, and regional adjustments. Additional adjustment factors are available for female applicants as this program is under-represented by women.
Upon completing the program, you will be eligible to apply for a CASA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). During the course, you will also obtain a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) and a Private Pilot Licence (PPL). In your final semester, you choose between two specialisation streams: Option A (Instrument stream) — Command Instrument Rating (IREX) with a frozen Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), or Option B (Instructor stream) — Flight Instructor Rating (FIR, single engine). RMIT facilitates the relevant CASA flight tests and the associated cost of the first attempt for each flight test is incorporated in the course fee.
You will be trained in single- and multi-engine aircraft including the Cessna 172S, Cessna 182T, Decathlon 8KCAB, and the PA-44 Piper Seminole (multi-engine). You will also have access to flight training devices including the Frasca 242 flight simulator and FM210 Touch Trainer. At Bendigo, newly acquired Cessna 172s with glass cockpits are available. RMIT holds an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC), meaning students receive more than the minimum required flying hours.
Yes. Students offered a place are required to undergo a CASA Class 1 Medical Examination by a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME). RMIT strongly recommends obtaining this medical certificate before commencing the program to ensure no existing condition would prevent you from completing CPL training. A Class 1 medical is required for the CPL and ATPL; a Class 2 medical is required for the PPL. The approximate cost of the first-issue Class 1 medical exam is $650–$750, plus a CASA Medical Processing Fee of $75. RMIT does not accept responsibility for students who enrol but cannot complete the program due to inability to receive a CASA Class 1 medical certificate.
To graduate, you must complete 192 credit points in total: 144 credit points of core subjects plus 48 credit points from one of two specialised streams (Instrument or Instructor). In Year 1, you complete 84 credit points of core subjects plus 12 credit points from Aviation Technical Options, totalling 96 credit points. In Year 2, you complete 24 credit points of core subjects, 24 credit points from Aviation Technical Options, and 48 credit points from either the Instrument or Instructor stream. Full-time study involves approximately 35 hours per week, including theory classes at the flight training campus (2–3 days), one day at Melbourne City campus, and 1–2 days of flying. If you complete only the first 8 core subjects and gain your PPL, you may be eligible for an exit award: the Diploma of Flying (Private Pilot Licence).

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
