Common Questions
The one-year professional placement occurs in Year 3 of the degree and can take the form of a long internship, multiple shorter placements, or a combination of both. It allows you to earn academic credit while working in industry, giving you the opportunity to explore different sectors and shape your career path. You can potentially start completing the 96 credit points (2 semesters) of professional practice once your foundation and core subjects are successfully completed. The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team supports you in researching, applying for, and securing tailored internships aligned with your career goals.
Yes, the Bachelor of Accounting Professional Practice is accredited by both CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). The program satisfies the academic requirements for direct entry into the CPA Australia program, and graduates are eligible to enrol in the CPA Australia program and apply for Associate membership. For CAANZ, the program satisfies the academic requirements for entry into the CA program, and graduates are eligible for Provisional member status and have met the academic requirements for entry to the CA program.
In Year 1, you'll complete introductory business foundation subjects such as Understanding the Business Environment and Integrated Perspectives on Business Problems. In Year 2, you'll deepen knowledge with subjects in accounting data analytics and validation, company and finance law, cost analysis, managerial advisory finance, and professional skills subjects including Developing Professionally and Work, Health, Safety, and Wellbeing. Year 3 is dedicated to your one-year professional placement in industry. In Year 4, you'll focus on specialised subjects including financial accountability and reporting, strategic accounting and leadership, and taxation, completing a capstone subject and 2 elective subjects.
The Bachelor of Accounting Professional Practice is offered as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). For 2026, the annual student contribution (tuition fee) for a standard full-time year is between AU$4,738 and AU$17,399, depending on the band of each subject enrolled. Accounting subjects fall under the Law, Accounting, Administration, Economics, Commerce, Communications, Society and Culture band at AU$17,399 per standard year. You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan to defer up to the full amount of your student contribution fees. An additional Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 per year applies. Scholarships are also available, including the David Thomson Scholarship for Accounting (worth up to AU$50,000) for commencing students from rural/regional areas.
Upon graduating, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Honours or Postgraduate degree for further study. For professional pathways, the degree satisfies the academic requirements for direct entry into the CPA Australia program (with graduates eligible for Associate membership) and the CAANZ CA program (with graduates eligible for Provisional membership). The course has been developed in consultation with an Industry Advisory Committee made up of high-profile industry representatives to ensure it remains aligned with current professional standards and practices.
