Common Questions
Unlike the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) emphasises research skills from your first year. You work directly with leading scientists on real research projects, access state-of-the-art laboratories, and complete an embedded honours year that culminates in a supervised independent research project. This means you graduate with a higher qualification and a professional portfolio, giving you a competitive edge for research-focused careers or a pathway to PhD studies.
The program offers 25 majors across physical, natural and human sciences, including Advanced Physical Oceanography, Advanced Physics, Anatomy, Bioinformatics, Biology & Biodiversity, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Climate Systems Science, Earth Science, Ecology and Conservation, Genetics, Geography, Immunology, Marine and Coastal Science, Materials Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychology, and Statistics. You can study a single or double major, and also explore from 41 complementary minors.
The embedded honours year is the fourth year of the program and involves a year-long supervised independent research project in your chosen field, and in some cases advanced coursework (48 UOC / 8 courses). Entry into the fourth year Honours program is subject to academic performance and progression requirements. Students who are unsuccessful in applying for entry into Honours may exit after three years with a Bachelor of Science award.
For domestic students in a Commonwealth Supported Place, the 2026 indicative first year full fee is $9,500, with an indicative full fee to complete the degree of $40,500. For international students, the 2026 indicative first year full fee is $61,500, with an indicative full fee to complete the degree of $268,500. These fees are for tuition only and are subject to annual review.
SciConnect is an online system integrated into the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program that helps students navigate their university experience, track professional development, and showcase skills to future employers. It focuses on four key areas: Orientation (helping students find their place in the UNSW Science community and choose their major), co-curricular involvement (connecting students with industry leaders and professional development opportunities), career development (tracking and visualising professional skills growth), and graduate portfolio (developing a portfolio of knowledge, skills and professional experiences to present to future employers).

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
