About This Course

By completing this combined bachelor's and master's course you will graduate with both a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and a Master of Agricultural Science. In your first three years you will complete the Agricultural Science and Technology (Extended Major) which will develop critical thinking skills in the traditional agricultural sciences and emerging digital technologies, followed by a semester of postgraduate study. You will then complete a final year of postgraduate study in the Master of Agricultural Science. The master's component of the course is highly inter-disciplinary. You will be guided through a research project and will gain skills in data analysis, interpretation and communication of their findings. The course will provide a rigorous understanding of agricultural systems and how to maintain or increase production levels in a more sustainable manner. This course prepares you with the knowledge and skills you need for a future in the rapidly evolving field of agricultural science and technology.

General Requirements

ATAR of 90 or above (Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) 2016 onwards)
Mathematics Methods ATAR; OR Mathematics Applications ATAR with a mathematics unit taken in the first year; OR students without ATAR mathematics to take two mathematics units in their first year
Chemistry ATAR or an additional chemistry unit taken in the first year
Minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0 (English competency)

Can I exit the combined bachelor's and master's program early with a bachelor's degree?

Yes. If you decide not to continue in the combined bachelor's and master's (CBM) program, you can exit after three years with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Advanced). Note that the Advanced Bachelor Degree is available only as a CBM exit award — it is not offered for direct enrolment and is not awarded on completion of the full CBM.

What specialisations are available in the Master of Agricultural Science component?

The Master of Agricultural Science offers specialisations in Agricultural Economics, Crop and Livestock Farming Systems, Genetics and Breeding, or Soil Science and Plant Nutrition.

What practical and research facilities are available to students in this course?

UWA is well-equipped for teaching and research with a field station, a research farm, and outstanding research facilities including the UWA Plant Growth Facility (which consists of 19 greenhouses, 8 phytotrons, 29 plant growth rooms and 8 plant growth cabinets), the Shenton Park Field Station (a large-scale agricultural research facility 7 kilometres from Crawley Campus), the School of Agriculture and Environment, the Institute of Agriculture, the Centre for Plant Genetics and Breeding, SoilsWest, and the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative.

What skills will I develop through this combined degree?

You will learn to integrate agricultural knowledge with skills in geographic information systems (GIS), programming and data analysis to guide decision making for improved agricultural productivity; be a critical thinker able to address global challenges such as climate change and increasing demand for food and fibre; assess how climate, soils, plants, animals and farm management practices influence agricultural production; evaluate agricultural trade and commodity marketing; and undertake research projects from inception and design of experimental hypotheses through to testing, analyses and communication of results.
