Bachelor of Ancient History

This course provides training in Ancient History through the study of early Egypt and the ancient Near East; classical Greece and Rome, and onto Late Antiquity and early Medieval History. Thus, the course takes a broader view of Ancient History that includes the study of the past in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  As part of your degree, you are required to take an introductory unit in archaeology. Two thirds of your study will be focused on units in Ancient History and through choosing electives, you can shape the rest of your degree to enhance your knowledge of cognate subjects, such as Archaeology, Anthropology, Modern History, Ancient and Modern Languages or to pursue another area of personal interest.  It is the course's embrace of such a range of skills pertinent to Ancient World Studies and the breadth of its geographical and chronological compass that give the course its distinct character. You may enroll in internal or external modes of study for all units in the course. The objectives of the course are to enhance your understanding of the history of a wide context of ancient cultures and to provide disciplinary skills for subsequent research. The course has a proven track-record of training students for Higher Degree Research in Ancient History, as well as providing students with a range of skills for employment.  A distinctive feature of the course is an internship, that can be held either within the University working with an academic researcher, or with a heritage organisation in Australia, or as a participant in an archaeological excavation.
