You can choose to study either the Applied Geology stream at Curtin Perth or the Mining Geology stream at Curtin Kalgoorlie. The Applied Geology stream covers the breadth of Earth history investigation and applied geosciences, including topics such as environmental geosciences, groundwater resources, and sustainable management of mineral and energy exploration and extraction. The Mining Geology stream combines studies of resource and field geology with mining systems, resource estimation and process mineralogy, with the final year of study undertaken at Curtin Kalgoorlie.
In your first year, you'll gain a foundation in geology, chemistry, maths, scientific communication and computer skills. Your second year will focus on the theoretical, laboratory and field skills required to understand geological processes. Your final year will focus on application in the workplace, and you will choose to study either the Applied Geology stream at Curtin Perth or the Mining Geology stream at Curtin Kalgoorlie. You can also tailor your degree with units that emphasise specific applied areas of geoscience.
Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Australian Institute of Geoscientists and/or the Geological Society of Australia.
Yes, you can extend your expertise and career opportunities by studying Applied Geology as a double degree with Environmental Biology or Finance. Further study options also include the Bachelor of Science (Honours), Master of Science (Geology), Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy.
The guaranteed ATAR for the Bachelor of Applied Geology is 70. The essential prerequisite subject is Mathematics Applications ATAR. There are no desirable subjects listed. If you do not meet the ATAR requirement, there are alternative entry pathways including portfolio entry, VET/TAFE qualifications, work and life experience, and bridging or enabling programs.
