Bachelor of Applied Public Health (Honours)

The Bachelor of Applied Public Health (Honours) allows students to build on the knowledge gained in their undergraduate degree, develop research skills that equip them for future study at a higher degree level, and work closely with an academic expert to contribute to a particular area of interest. Graduates leave with an understanding of research principles and methods; a significant body of knowledge in a particular area that supports further study, research or other professional work; the ability to research, interpret and relay potentially complex theoretical principles; the technical skills to design and conduct a research project with some level of independence; and the skills to work collaboratively within an academic team of researchers as a junior member. The honours year is 80 credit points, made up of 30 credit points of coursework units and 50 credit points of thesis units. Coursework covers Research Methods in Biomedical and Health Sciences Research, Communicating Research in Biomedical and Health Sciences, and a choice between Qualitative Research Methods in Health Science and Statistics for Biomedical and Health Sciences Research; those units are scheduled online, while the honours thesis units require campus attendance. Progress through the thesis component is closely monitored by each student's research supervisor. The course takes one year full-time or the equivalent part-time at ACU's Melbourne campus, and graduates may be eligible to progress to postgraduate coursework degrees with specialties in public health and global health, or to a Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy.
