About This Course

A challenging contemporary dance focused course where regular performance, intensive training and classroom practice are central to the philosophy of the program. The pursuit of physical excellence is paired with the nurturing of creativity, laying the foundations for the performer, choreographer and/or independent practitioner. The course provides an insight into dance as an art form, and as a social and educative experience, offering additional skills in communication, critical thinking, research and analysis. Sustainability in relation to professional career pathways is emphasised through engagement with industry partners and exposure to diverse performance environments. Industry placement, short study tours and international exchange opportunities provide a local, national and international perspective.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

All applicants are required to submit satisfactory medical reports, and attend an interview. Information regarding interview and audition requirements and procedures is available from WAAPA.
All applicants are required to attend an audition. In the audition, applicants should demonstrate prior training to an intermediate level in any dance style, or show significant natural aptitude and facility for dance.
Should any additional training or background information be required, applicants will be invited to interview.
Current ECU students who are completing the Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance) (C79) and who wish to continue their training, must audition for the Bachelor of Arts (Dance) (T73) course.
Academic admission requirements (Band 3): The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:
- AQF Cert IV
- Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
- Undergraduate Certificate
- Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test
- University Preparation Course
- Indigenous University Orientation Course
- Experience Based Entry Scheme
For international students, requirements include your secondary school results.
English Language requirements (Band 3) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:
- Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent
- Special Tertiary Admissions Test
- IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0)
- Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada
- University Preparation Course
- Indigenous University Orientation Course
- AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree
- Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
- Other tests, courses or programs defined on the English Proficiency Bands page

Is an audition required to be accepted into the Bachelor of Arts (Dance) at ECU?

Yes, an audition is required. All applicants are required to attend an audition in which they should demonstrate prior training to an intermediate level in any dance style, or show significant natural aptitude and facility for dance. Should any additional training or background information be required, applicants will be invited to interview. All applicants are also required to submit satisfactory medical reports.

What are the estimated fees for domestic and international students in the first year?

For domestic students, the estimated first year indicative fee is AUD $9,550 (Commonwealth supported place). For international students, the estimated first year indicative fee is AUD $40,650.

Does this course include any work placement or industry experience?

Yes, students will complete the Career Pathways unit as part of this course, which is a professional practice unit consisting of choreography, rehearsal, and performance. Students are allowed two weeks (preferably one in each semester) to complete one or two placements. Placement hours for the Career Pathways units will usually vary between 10 and 30 hours, depending on how many hours the host organisation is able to offer.

What timetable requirements should students be aware of for this course?

This course has a modified timetable. Students should be aware that there are non-standard timetable requirements, including evening performances and rehearsals three times yearly.

Are there special entry pathways for students who have completed the WAAPA Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance?

Yes, students who have completed the WAAPA Advanced Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance) or Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance) follow a different course structure in Year 3, which includes units such as Elite Ballet 1 and Elite Ballet 2, along with Performance and Career Pathways. However, current ECU students completing the Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance) (C79) who wish to continue their training must still audition for the Bachelor of Arts (Dance) (T73) course.
