Course Overview

About This Course

This program is designed to provide students with appropriate training and theoretical background to equip them to work as professional interpreters and/or translators. The program consists of a key field of study in Interpreting and Translation and a major in language, linguistics and cultural studies. Students also complete a period of professional practical experience. Offered as a Bachelor Degree qualification of 240 credit points, it is normally completed in 3 years full-time and 6 years part-time. Students do not apply for this award directly: admission is to the parent program, and the qualification is conferred on those who leave that program early having completed the required credit points. It is administered within Western Sydney University's Humanities and Communication Arts academic area. Subjects include Psychology of Language, Discovering language: Everything you've ever wanted to know but never asked, The Sound of Language, Historical Linguistics and Bilingualism and Biculturalism. Graduates are expected to be able to apply the necessary skills to function as a professional interpreter and/or translator; demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of interpreting and translation; and analyse text and discourse according to the context of use.
