A Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Notre Dame Australia will provide you with the transferrable skills required in a global workspace. Our range of subject areas includes traditional humanities disciplines such as History, English Literature, Politics & International Relations to more industry-focused disciplines of Archaeology, Journalism, Theatre Studies, and Environmental Management. Our flexible structure means you can design your degree around a single Major, a Double Major or a Major and Minor. Alternatively, you can combine your arts degree with another degree from within the School of Arts & Sciences or from another School to complete a double degree.

The Bachelor of Arts has a unique Major in Social Justice. The courses in this Major are open to students studying any discipline. The concept of social justice challenges you to step out of traditional mindsets and become involved in making a difference in your chosen career and our world. You will begin to understand the causes of the complex problems in our society and consider lasting solutions. Service-learning, part of our Social Justice discipline and open to all students in the Bachelor of Arts, combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.

General Requirements

WA – Applicants with recent Secondary Education

Indicative ATAR/Selection Rank* of 70
OR International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 25
*Selection Ranks include ATAR plus Adjustment Factors.

WA – Applicants with Higher Education

Successful completion of 2 subjects at an undergraduate level or higher*
OR Successful completion of the Notre Dame Tertiary Pathway Program (TPP), or a tertiary preparation program from another institution that is deemed to be of a similar academic rigour to the Notre Dame TPP*
Applicants who have successfully completed subjects at another University, which are relevant to the selected program of study, may be eligible for credit (Advanced Standing).

WA – Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

Successful completion of AQF Certificate IV or higher from an accredited provider such as TAFE or a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)

WA – Applicants with Work and Life Experience

Applicants who left secondary education more than two years previously and who have not undertaken VET or higher education study since may be considered for direct entry.
To qualify, applicants must be 20 years of age as at 1 March in the year of intake and meet one or more of the following:
Applicants who have completed at least two years of relevant work experience may be considered for direct entry. Applicants must provide evidence of their work experience, including duties undertaken and years of experience, and they must demonstrate that they have the academic capability to undertake undergraduate studies. The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) may be required*.
OR Completion of STAT with scores of at least 135 in the Multiple Choice section and 140 in the Written English section*.
OR Completion of two Year 12 WACE, HSC or equivalent exams, with a result equivalent to the Indicative ATAR/Selection Rank listed under Secondary Education section above.
*STAT results must have been obtained within the last three calendar years.

Experience Based Entry

If you are currently in Year 12 and completing the ATAR, General, VET, or Enabling pathway, you may be eligible to secure a place at Notre Dame University through experience based entry.

How many courses do I need to complete for the Bachelor of Arts, and how are they structured?

To complete a Bachelor of Arts you will study 24 courses. These include the core curriculum and a compulsory academic writing course, your eight-course Major, and elective courses: 1 course in academic writing, 8 courses for your Major, and 13 elective courses from the School of Arts and Sciences, which can be used to form a second Major (8 courses) or Minor (6 courses).

Can I combine the Bachelor of Arts with another degree?

Yes, you can combine your arts degree with another degree from within the School of Arts & Sciences or from another School to complete a double degree. This particular program is the Bachelor of Arts (Politics & Journalism) combined with a Bachelor of Behavioural Science.

Is there any practical work or internship component in this degree?

An internship of 80 hours is available but not required. Each discipline area offers you the opportunity to take part in the Internship program where you will learn on location in a real work environment and get credit towards your degree. Overseas internships are possible. Additionally, service-learning through the Social Justice area combines community service with academic instruction, with placements in the local community and international options such as travel to Cambodia.

What Majors are available in the Bachelor of Arts, and can I study more than one?

Students must complete at least one Major, and each Major is comprised of eight courses. Available Majors include Advertising, Applied Psychology, Archaeology, Behavioural Science, Counselling, English Literature, Environmental Management, Film and Screen Production, History, Journalism, Liberal Arts, Mathematics, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Social Justice, Sociology (Sydney), Theatre Studies, and Theology. Students may also use elective courses to form a second Major or a six-course Minor from a range of available disciplines.

Where and when can I commence the Bachelor of Arts?

The Bachelor of Arts is available at both Fremantle and Sydney campuses. Students can commence in either Semester 1 or Semester 2. The program is offered on campus in both full-time and part-time study modes, with a standard duration of 3 years full-time or equivalent part-time.
