Common Questions
Students can choose to specialise in one of three areas: Conflict and Security, Diplomacy and Activism, or Human Rights and International Law. Students who complete a specialisation will have it indicated on their academic transcript. Note that Conflict and Security and Diplomacy and Activism require Trimester 3 study, while Human Rights and International Law is available as a part-time study option for Research Option 2 in Trimester 1 & 2 only.
Students must have successfully completed 24 credit points of study and achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 to continue through to the Master of International Relations component. Students who do not fulfil this requirement are eligible to graduate with the Bachelor of Arts as an alternative exit.
There are three pathways available in the Master of International Relations: the PhD Pathway, which involves a Minor Thesis (3 credit points) plus 5 credit points from specialisations and/or course electives; the non PhD Pathway Research Paper option, which involves completing AIX701 Research Paper (1 credit point) plus 7 credit points from specialisations and/or course electives; and the non PhD Pathway Professional Experience option, which involves completing APE701 Internship Capstone (2 credit points) plus 6 credit points from specialisations and/or course electives.
You can choose from more than 30 disciplines, including Animation, Anthropology, Arabic, Chinese, Criminology, Design Thinking, Education, English (Children's Literature, Creative Writing, Literature), Film and Television Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, Indonesian, International Relations, Media and Communication, Media Studies, Middle East Studies, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Politics and Policy Studies, Public Relations Studies, Religious Studies, Social Media, Sociology, Sport and Society, Sport Journalism, Spanish, Strategic Advertising, UX Design, Visual Arts and Photography, Visual Communication Design, and Web Design.
The Bachelor of Arts/Master of International Relations is available to commence in Trimester 1 (starting March) or Trimester 2 (starting July), at both the Burwood (Melbourne) campus and Online. Direct applications to Deakin for Trimester 2 2026 close on 21 June 2026.
