About This Course

Inspire and positively influence the lives of the young people who enter your classroom with a challenging and rewarding career in secondary education. ACU's Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Secondary) is an innovative pathway into secondary teaching with two specialist teaching areas, helping you become a teacher who is confident, adaptable, and able to design and implement engaging and flexible learning experiences that meet the needs of your students. You deepen your disciplinary knowledge by completing a Bachelor of Arts alongside an initial teacher education qualification at the postgraduate level, and can complete your secondary teacher accreditation requirements for two major teaching areas, one major and up to two minor teaching areas, or one major and one minor teaching area together with accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic schools. The award totals 360 credit points: 240 credit points of Bachelor of Arts study, including arts majors and minors, a 40 credit point Education Studies minor, the community engagement unit HUMA333 Social Impact in Action and ACU Core Curriculum; and 120 credit points from the Master of Teaching (Secondary), covering education studies and effective teaching units, secondary curriculum, pedagogy and assessment units matched to your teaching areas, and education electives. Supervised professional experience is at the heart of the course: you complete 80 days of school and community-based placements, arranged by the faculty, plus a minimum of 35 hours of community engagement. Master of Teaching (Secondary) units can also be studied online. Graduates are eligible for registration as secondary school teachers in government, independent, Catholic and other faith-based schools.

General Requirements

Domestic students

Applicants must comply with ACU's Admission to Coursework Programs Policy, which includes meeting a minimum ATAR requirement and English Language Requirements. In addition, applicants in Victoria are required to demonstrate suitability for teaching.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent:
- New South Wales: Assumed knowledge - 2 units of English (any) (Band 3); Mathematics (other than Mathematics General 2) for study in Mathematics (Band 3)
- Queensland: Assumed knowledge - English (Units 3 & 4, C)
- Victoria: Prerequisites - Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL. Prerequisite for study in Mathematics: Units 3 and 4 Mathematical Methods
Indicative ATAR: 60.00 (Brisbane), 60.00 (Melbourne), 60.00 (Strathfield).
Applicants who have completed at least two units of AQF-recognised study at bachelor level or above are assigned a new selection rank reflecting their study level, duration and grade point average; prior study or relevant work experience aligned with the learning outcomes of units in the course may earn credit or recognition of prior learning, which can shorten the time to complete.
ACU does not accept direct applications for teaching degrees; applications must be made through VTAC, UAC or QTAC with this course listed as the highest preference.

International students

International applicants need the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 Certificate, and must comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy, including the English Language Proficiency requirements.
International students completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (either outside or in Australia), an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 must apply for admission through their local Tertiary Admission Centre (TAC) and are assessed on their performance in those studies (i.e. ATAR or equivalent).
Subject prerequisites are the same as those listed for domestic applicants, and applicants in Victoria are also required to demonstrate suitability for teaching.
