Course Overview
The Anthropocene has placed unprecedented impacts on biodiversity and conservation, which has profoundly negative implications on the cultural, social, economic and environmental value on society. To understand these effects, there is a pertinent need to cultivate a new generation of passionate environmental stewards and conservation leaders with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to develop a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between biodiversity and the well-being of our planet.
The Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation is an exciting course designed to equip and inspire passionate students with the skills, knowledge and networks to ride the wave of emerging technologies and concepts associated with conserving our planet. This course has a strong research focus, drawing on Macquarie's exceptional research strengths in ecology and environment. It has an emphasis on laboratory and field-based practical components, arming our students with skills to effectively research, evaluate and communicate within this burgeoning field.
Our students will develop an appreciation of the historical, biological, ecological, cultural, ethical, moral and management issues associated with conservation science, and be equipped with the deep knowledge and leadership skills to ensure a sustainable future where biodiversity thrives, ecosystems flourish, and humanity coexists harmoniously with nature.
*Fieldtrips form a vital element of this course, with total costs of approximately $300-350.

To gain entry, you need a minimum Band 5 in one science or mathematics subject (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture, Earth & Environmental Science, Mathematics Advanced, or E2 in Mathematics Extension 1 or 2), a minimum Band 4 in a second science or mathematics subject, and a minimum Band 3 in three additional Category A or Extension subjects not already used to satisfy another requirement.
Yes, HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 can be used to satisfy entry requirements. Extension 1 and Extension 2 require a minimum result of E2 for the primary subject requirement, and a minimum of E1 for the secondary subject requirement.
A total of six subjects are required: one primary science or mathematics subject (Band 5 or equivalent), one secondary science or mathematics subject (Band 4 or equivalent), and three additional Category A or Extension subjects at a minimum of Band 3 or E1, none of which can be used to satisfy more than one requirement.
Yes, Earth & Environmental Science is an eligible subject for both the primary requirement (minimum Band 5) and the secondary requirement (minimum Band 4) for academic entry into the Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation at Macquarie University.
