Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences

The Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences (BBIOM) is a three-year, on-campus degree at Adelaide City Campus covering the science of the human body in both health and disease, from anatomy and physiology through to diagnosis and treatment. It is structured around choice: students can select up to two majors from eight areas — Biochemistry, Clinical Trials, Genetics, Medical Science, Microbiology and Immunology, Neuroscience, Public Health, and Reproductive and Childhood Health — allowing the degree to be tailored toward laboratory research, clinical/public-health pathways, or a combination.

The 144-unit structure (42 core units, 48 units for a major, 6 units of work-integrated learning, and 48 elective units) begins with shared core courses in health systems, research methods, anatomy and physiology, taught with an emphasis on cross-cultural and First Nations health perspectives. Students have access to dedicated anatomy labs and work with real human specimens, and can use the substantial elective allowance to add a second major or broaden into adjacent health topics rather than narrowing early.

In the final year, students complete a placement in a professional or research health setting under the supervision of qualified staff, giving direct exposure to the health workforce before graduating. The degree is positioned to feed into Australia's health and medical research sector at a time of anticipated health workforce shortages, with graduates equipped for research roles, further postgraduate study (including pathways into clinical professions), and broader health-industry careers.
