Explore human biology, disease processes and biomedical science with La Trobe's Bachelor of Biomedical Science.
In this degree, you will study foundational and applied biomedical sciences, with the flexibility to shape your degree through open electives that help you explore your interests and future study or career goals.
You will build core knowledge in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, bioscience, statistics, microbiology and epidemiology. Then you will deepen your understanding of physiology, pharmacology and biochemistry, while connecting biomedical science concepts to human body systems, health and disease.
You will apply your knowledge to clinically focused areas, including pathophysiology, biotechnology, pharmacology and diseases affecting major body systems. You can also extend your practical experience through elective placement opportunities.
By studying the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, you will learn how to:
analyse anatomy and physiology to understand how major body systems support health and respond to disease
apply chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology to biomedical science and human health
interpret microbiology, epidemiology and statistics to examine infection, health and disease
evaluate how diseases develop and progress across major body systems
assess how medicines interact with the body to prevent, manage and treat disease
apply biomedical science knowledge across diagnostics, biotechnology, haematology, infectious disease and chronic disease.

Domestic students:
Recent secondary education (Year 12)
This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.
VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.
HSC: One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 2), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 3).
Selection rank adjustments
VCE: A study score of 25 in Biology, Chemistry, Maths: Mathematical Methods, Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Physics equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.
HSC: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 in Mathematics General 2, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, Biology, Chemistry, Physics; any language other than English (Band 2). Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.
Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants
Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.
