Common Questions
Year 3 is undertaken at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. ECU students (outbound) will complete 120 credit points (6 units) at Portsmouth, covering subjects such as Business for Biosciences, Clinical Case Studies, Contemporary Biomedical Research, Biomedical Science Systematic Review, Clinical Pathology, and Genetic Basis of Disease. The first two years and fourth year are delivered on campus by Edith Cowan University.
In the final-year unit MMS3500 Professional Practice in Biomedical Science, students are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of unpaid work placement outside of timetabled class activities. Students gain work experience aligned with their chosen field of biomedical science specialisation in clinical, laboratory, professional or simulated settings. Mandatory risk and health requirements must be met, and students may need to provide a first aid certificate, National Police Clearance, Working with Children Card, immunisation records and other certifications, the costs of which are borne by the student.
Students can choose from the following majors: Applied Chemistry, Data Science, Human Biology, Human Genetics, Medical Sciences, and Nutrition Science. The supplementary program consists of 8 units and may be completed as an 8-unit Major, or a 6-unit Minor plus 2 Elective units. Major, Minor and Elective choices should be discussed with the Course Coordinator before enrolling.
The Commonwealth supported estimated 1st year indicative fee is AUD $8,950. This is a guide only, based on a typical enrolment of students undertaking the first year of the course. At ECU, students pay for the individual units they enrol in rather than an overall course fee, so the total cost will vary depending on the units chosen. ECU fees are adjusted annually, and some units may also require payment of incidental fees.
Biomedical science is a continually changing, dynamic profession with long-term career prospects including management, research, education, the health industry, and specialised laboratory work. Possible future job titles include Audiology, Biochemistry Technician, Haematology Technician, Histology Technician, Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Scientist, Medical Researcher, Research Officer, and Nutritionist. Graduates may also consider further study such as the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, Master of Medical and Health Science by Research, or Master of Public Health.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
