There are six majors available, all offered on-campus at JCU Townsville: Bioinformatics, Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Physiology and Pharmacology. Students select their major from their third year, after building broad foundational and second-year knowledge.
The minimum ATAR is 65. The only required subject prerequisite is English (Units 3/4, C). Recommended knowledge includes Mathematical Methods (Units 3/4, C), Chemistry (Units 3/4, C), plus one of Biology, Health, Physical Education or Physics. Applicants with an ATAR of 73 and above are guaranteed entry if they meet subject prerequisites, while those with an ATAR of 90 and above are guaranteed entry with all subject prerequisites waived.
The estimated annual Commonwealth Supported Fee for a full-time study load is $9,290 AUD. This estimate is variable and subject to fluctuation depending on choice of elective subjects, and the Student Services and Amenities Fee is also required. Fee deferral and scholarships are available for eligible students.
Students engage with hands-on learning opportunities from their first year, developing valuable work skills in state-of-the-art laboratories, hospitals, and medical centres, both on- and off-campus. JCU's small class sizes provide additional opportunities for personalised learning and tailored support, and JCU's unique focus on tropical health and disease management ensures a practical learning experience like no other. The Medical Laboratory Science major also includes placement opportunities and training in world-class diagnostic medical laboratories and research centres.
Yes. High-achieving students may be offered the opportunity to study for a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Honours) degree, which consists of extra study and the development of a personal research project and thesis. An Honours degree is usually required for entry to research higher degrees.
