Common Questions
Students are required to complete two practice education placements, each consisting of 500 hours of supervised professional experience in social work settings, for a combined total of 1,000 hours. These placements are consistent with the requirements set out by the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS) and adhere to the placement guidelines and protocols.
Yes, there are two compulsory 10-day on-campus intensives. The first covers Group Work (BSWSWP202) and Skills for Social Work Practice 2 (BSWPRP204) in Year 2, and students must attend in person and successfully complete this intensive to progress to Practice Education 1. The second covers Grief, Loss and Trauma (BSWSWP308) and Transition to Professional Practice (BSWPRP307) in Year 4, and must be completed to progress to Practice Education 2. Intensive study locations may include Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
The Bachelor of Social Work is an AASW-accredited qualification. Graduates are eligible for full AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers) membership and can work in hospitals, government agencies, schools, community health and beyond.
Prior to commencing fieldwork placements, students must provide a COVID-19 Vaccination Record, Immunisation Record, National Police Record Check and/or Police clearance, and a Working with Children Check. Immunisation requirements include Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (dTpa), Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Varicella, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and annual flu vaccination. Students must also be screened for Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, Hepatitis C, HIV, and Tuberculosis, with positive results requiring referral to an infectious disease specialist.
The Bachelor of Social Work has been designed and developed by Acknowledge Education (PRV 12146). The Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors (AIPC) delivers the course on behalf of Acknowledge Education. It is available in Melbourne with intakes in March, July, and November (for domestic students only) and is delivered in full-time, part-time, and blended modes over four years.
