Common Questions
There are six majors available: Chemical Engineering (Townsville only), Civil Engineering (Townsville only), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (both Townsville and Cairns), Electronic Systems and Internet of Things Engineering (Cairns only), Maritime Engineering (Cairns campus for Years 1 and 2, then transfer to University of Tasmania), and Mechanical Engineering (Townsville only). For all majors except Maritime Engineering, you can complete your first year in Cairns or Townsville and relocate only in your second year if your major isn't offered at your starting campus.
This course requires work-integrated learning (WIL) activities, such as placements, fieldwork, internships or industry-partnered projects. During the course, you will be required to complete a minimum of 480 hours of WIL. You will participate in twelve weeks of work placements with industry partners and may have the opportunity for paid work experience. For students studying the Engineering major in Chemistry, a further 3-hour fieldtrip is also required.
Yes, JCU's Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia. However, the Electrical and Electronic Engineering major on the Cairns campus holds provisional accreditation status until the first cohort graduates from it, at which time JCU is able to apply for full accreditation. Graduates are qualified to work in Australia, New Zealand, Europe or Asia.
Studies culminate in the fourth year with an Honours component — a major engineering project and thesis. You will research a current industry issue and work towards designing a solution. An Honours degree also supports entry into a Higher Degree by Research. High-achieving graduates can enrol in this extra year and further develop critical thinking skills through completion of a research project and thesis.
The indicative annual cost is $42,477+, which is the estimated annual tuition and student services and amenities fee for a full-time study load for 2026. These fees are subject to change in following years. Scholarships and financial aid are available if eligible — prospective students are encouraged to find out more from the JCU team.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
