About This Course

Design the systems and algorithms behind today’s most advanced technologies. Computer science gives you the technical foundation behind modern digital systems. From artificial intelligence and cyber security to software development, you’ll learn how complex systems are designed, built and improved.

You’ll develop strong skills in algorithms, data structures and system design while building the problem-solving capability employers value in a rapidly evolving digital economy. Students can specialise in their degree by choosing one of three majors. Each major provides a special suite of courses to develop in-demand technical skills for high-growth careers. Ysobel leads the NUBots, programming soccer playing robots to compete in the RoboCup Championships. Final year students work on a project related to computer science and information technology. The work is undertaken in an organisation or as an innovative proposal for an entrepreneurial prototype. Students undertake between 200 and 250 hours of career-ready placement with an organisation involved in computer science or information technology. The Bachelor of Computer Science (Callaghan) is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Full accreditation applies to the Software Develop and Cyber Security majors. The Artificial Intelligence major is provisionally accredited by ACS for students who commence from 2025. Computer science spans a wide range of areas including complex problem solving, artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning, embedded systems, computer networks and distributed systems, computer graphics, web applications, bioinformatics and data security. Computer scientists perform challenging programming tasks and supervise other programmers, and devise new ways to use computers and develop effective solutions for computing problems.
