About This Course

Create innovative solutions to social issues and build a safer community with La Trobe's Bachelor of Criminology.

Understand crime in its broader social context and how our responses are shaped by gender, race, power and money. Address real-world problems while gaining a deeper understanding of issues such as family violence, international crime, youth justice, imprisonment and deaths in custody.

By studying La Trobe's Bachelor of Criminology, you will:

investigate the complex causes of crime, principles of crime prevention and policy, and how social factors intersect with our criminal justice system
explore the role of courts, police, prisons and how deviance and crime are understood by different parts of society
learn how to critically analyse the Australian legal system in its historical, ethical, economic and social context

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Recent secondary education (Year 12)

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

HSC: One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 3), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 4).

Selection rank adjustments

VCE: A study score of 25 in any Humanities or Legal Studies equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.

HSC: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 in any humanities, legal studies; or any language other than English (Band 2). Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.

Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants

To be eligible for an offer of admission into the Bachelor of Criminology at La Trobe University, an applicant must:

Successful completion of two of the following four Open Access Pathway subjects:
LST1LOJ - LAW AND (DIS)ORDER
LCR1ALS - INTRODUCTION TO THE AUSTRALIAN LEGAL SYSTEM
LCR1CSS - CRIMINOLOGY SKILLS
LST1UNC - UNDERSTANDING CRIME

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.
