Common Questions
The course takes 5 years full-time or part-time equivalent. You may be able to study available units in the optional third trimester to fast-track your degree, however your course duration may be extended if there are delays in meeting course requirements, such as completing a placement.
A distinctive feature of Deakin's accredited Bachelor of Laws is its focus on practical learning. Guided by expert criminology and law academics, you'll build skills through real-world experiences at the Deakin Law Clinic and Deakin Community Legal Service. Working on real cases, you will apply theory to practice and explore contemporary justice issues alongside industry professionals. Students must also complete 1 experiential/practice unit as one of their Law Elective units, choosing from Legal Professional Practice (MLL338), Community Legal Internship (MLL351), Deakin Law Clinic (MLL420), or Mooting and Advocacy (MLL460).
The lowest selection rank varies by campus: 90.00 ATAR at Burwood (Melbourne) with a Deakin Guaranteed ATAR of 80; 85.65 ATAR at Waterfront (Geelong) with a Deakin Guaranteed ATAR of 76; and an unpublished (NP) ATAR for Online with a Deakin Guaranteed ATAR of 75. All applicants must have a study score of at least 30 in English EAL or at least 25 in English other than EAL, and an unadjusted ATAR of at least 50.
Yes. Students can take advantage of a global study itinerary, which includes the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong and Vienna, international study tours that provide insights into the unique interplay between law, culture and governance in foreign jurisdictions, as well as options to study one or more elective units at an overseas institution. There is also a Transnational Study Tour unit (MLT324) available as a law elective.
To complete the Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Laws, you must pass 40 credit points in total. This includes 16 credit points from the Bachelor of Criminology (6 credit points of core units, 6 credit points of criminology course elective units, and 4 credit points of course elective units from Bachelor of Arts major sequences, with a minimum of 6 credit points at level 3) and 24 credit points from the Bachelor of Laws (18 credit points of core units, 1 credit point of Work Integrated Learning or practical course elective units, and 5 credit points of course elective units, with a minimum of 14 credit points at levels 2 and 3). Course requirements for both the Bachelor of Criminology (A329) and Bachelor of Laws (M312) must be satisfied.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
