Scholarly Perspectives on Design
Learn about the ideas and concepts of design. Discover the art of presenting and defending a point of view in a convincing and effective way by referring to valid and trustworthy sources of information. Develop critical thinking skills and delve into the history and language of the design industry.
Principles of Design
Learn about the principles of design through creating vector graphics in the form of motifs, pictorial marks and logos using Adobe Illustrator and other tools. Visual rules that can be applied in the creation of any image to enhance their impact, attractiveness and ability to communicate.
Fundamentals of Image Making
Learn about illustration and the creative and technical production of digital images using Photoshop and other tools. Explore a range of drawing techniques and tools including processes of iteration and refinement, and investigate visual storytelling through the development of a series of images.
Design for Print Media
Learn about designing page layouts for print through the combination of images and type.
Common Questions
The Bachelor of Design & Visual Communication is available online only (for domestic students). It is built for independent learners who need maximum flexibility without compromising on engagement, featuring 2 hours of live online classes plus 1 hour of national content each week.
The course can be completed in 2 years (6 trimesters) via the Fast Track full-time option, 2.5 years (8 trimesters) full-time, or 3 years (9 trimesters) full-time. A part-time option is also available for domestic students who need additional flexibility, though part-time is not available for international students.
The course consists of 20 units at $2,999 each and 2 units at $5,998 each, with an indicative annual course fee of $23,992 AUD (based on 1.0 EFTSL). A Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is also applicable. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
You must satisfy one of the following: completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (such as QCE, WACE, HSC, or SACE) or equivalent; completion of a Certificate IV level qualification or higher under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF); or qualification under SAE's Experience Based Entry scheme if you do not meet the above criteria.
In Stage 1 (Foundations), you will develop essential technical design skills and the knowledge required to collaborate with other creative media students and professionals. Units include Scholarly Perspectives on Design (DIM111), Principles of Design (DDX170), Fundamentals of Image Making (DDX171), and Design for Print Media (DDX174), covering topics such as design history, vector graphics, digital image-making, and page layout for print.
