In Year 1, you will be introduced to world-class game design studio courses including critical game studies, game history, imaging and 2D artwork, and game engines. In Year 2, you will grow your understanding of game studies and production through studio courses covering concept art and advanced imaging, 3D character design, sound design for interactive environments, and experience design, while also beginning electives in areas such as journalism, film, cultural studies, sound or animation. In Year 3, you will study game design and analysis, games industry, and professional portfolio skills, culminating in a major team project aimed at producing a completed and publicly available game.
Applicants must complete one of six briefs as part of the selection task. The briefs include: (1) Improvements to an Existing Game (500–1000 words), (2) World Design Art Folio (3–7 pages), (3) World Narrative Design Folio (500–1000 words), (4) Game Modding Project folio (3–7 pages), (5) Game Prototype or Design folio (3–7 pages), or (6) Community Games Project Proposal (500–1000 words). Each brief is expected to take approximately 1 day (7 hours) to complete, and submissions should be compiled as a single PDF. AI-generated content is not permitted.
The program offers Commonwealth Supported Places, meaning tuition fees are subsidised by the Australian Government. In 2026, the annual student contribution amount for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$4,738 and AU$17,399, depending on the discipline bands of enrolled courses. The maximum Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) for 2026 is AU$373. Students may be eligible to defer fees via HECS-HELP and SA-HELP loan schemes.
Studying largely in a studio environment, you will be assessed through staff and peer review, problem solving, collaboration, portfolio building, and public showings. The course features a range of learning approaches including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, studio practice, problem-based learning, reflective techniques, online and face-to-face discussions and presentations, group-based learning, and negotiated learning for a major project.
The degree has close connections to the local independent games industry through teaching staff, overseas industry projects, events, festivals and exhibitions. RMIT has developed two dedicated games research groups focused on world-leading research, attracting expert staff who teach cutting-edge ideas. Students also have regular interaction with Bachelor of Information Technology (Games and Graphics Programming) students in a studio that reflects the constantly evolving practices of the industry.
