Scholarly Perspectives on Design
Learn about the ideas and concepts of design, presenting and defending a point of view using valid sources, developing critical thinking skills, and exploring the history and language of the design industry.
Principles of Design
Learn about the principles of design through creating vector graphics in the form of motifs, pictorial marks and logos using Adobe Illustrator and other tools.
Fundamentals of Image Making
Learn about illustration and the creative and technical production of digital images using Photoshop and other tools, exploring drawing techniques and visual storytelling.
Design for Print Media
Learn about designing page layouts for print through the combination of images and type.
Common Questions
The Bachelor of Design & Visual Communication is available online only (for domestic students). It is built for independent learners who need maximum flexibility, featuring 2 hours of live online classes plus 1 hour of national content each week, with fully virtual interactive sessions, discussions, and expert support.
There are multiple study duration options: 6 Trimesters Full Time (Fast Track) completing the course in approximately 2 years, 8 Trimesters Full Time over approximately 2.5 years, or 9 Trimesters Full Time over approximately 3 years. A part-time option is also available for domestic students.
The course consists of 20 units at $2,999 each and 2 units at $5,998 each, with an indicative annual course fee of $23,992 AUD (based on 1.0 EFTSL). FEE-HELP is available, and a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) also applies.
Intake dates for the online course are May 2026, September 2026, and February 2027.
The course is broken into three distinct stages. Stage 1 (Foundations) covers essential technical design skills including scholarly perspectives on design, principles of design using Adobe Illustrator, fundamentals of image making using Photoshop, and design for print media. The course as a whole covers branding and identity design, online and print design, user-centered design, digital image-making, and creative problem-solving.
