About This Course

The Bachelor of Education Birth to Five Years is a course that prepares you to become an early childhood teacher. During the course, you explore issues, concepts and practices which are common and specific to early childhood education. You will learn about play and learning sciences, language and literacy, preparation for teaching, health and physical education, science in education, curriculum and programming, mathematics, leadership and advocacy in early childhood contexts, humanities, social science and the environment. The course is designed to: develop professional knowledge and skills for teaching young children; prepare you for new and changing educational roles in early childhood; develop your skills as a reflective teacher; explore the connection between theory and practice in early childhood education; ensure continuing awareness of the environmental and cultural influences on teaching and learning in early childhood; better understand the needs of learners and communities with diverse linguistic and cultural orientations, including Indigenous learners.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Admission requirements are met by one of the following:
Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) or equivalent senior secondary qualification
Credit transfer arrangements are available to students commencing a bachelor degree at Charles Darwin University with completed Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree qualifications in the same field or discipline, subject to meeting criteria

How many days of practical placement are required to complete the Bachelor of Education Birth to Five Years?

This course includes the completion of a minimum of 80 days supervised practice teaching. You are required to undertake four professional experience blocks that require full-time commitment, and you must provide proof that you have met all university and State/Territory pre-placement requirements before commencing professional placements.

Is the Bachelor of Education Birth to Five Years accredited, and what registration will I be eligible for upon graduating?

Yes, this course has been accredited through the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Upon graduating, you will be recognised as an Early Childhood Teacher by ACECQA and be eligible for Provisional Teacher Registration with the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory (TRB NT). Requirements in other Australian states and territories may differ.

Yes, you can study the Bachelor of Education Birth to Five Years online or on campus, part-time or full-time. Should you choose to study online, you'll complete your placements close to home. All students have access to and are encouraged to make use of online learning materials and interaction.

What are the international tuition fees for this course?

The annual tuition fee for full time study in 2026 is AUD $31,432.00, which equates to $3,929.00 per 10 credit point unit (0.125 EFTSL). These fees are subject to increases annually, effective at the start of each calendar year. CDU also offers a number of scholarships to international students to assist with the cost of study.

How many credit points are required to complete the Bachelor of Education Birth to Five Years, and what does the course structure look like?

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 320 credit points. The course is made up of 29 core units totalling 290 credit points and 3 general elective units totalling 30 credit points. A maximum of 120 credit points may be taken from 100 level units, and a minimum of 80 credit points must be taken from 300 level units or above. Professional Experience units must be undertaken in the following sequence: EPE111, EPE240, EPE355, EPE450.
