Course Content
Foundations of Christian Education
A foundational subject introducing the philosophical and theoretical framework for the program. Explores the historical development of schooling and education internationally and nationally, key educational philosophers, and their influence on education with a particular focus on Christian education. Students begin to develop their own personal, dynamic philosophy of teaching along with an understanding of curriculum and planning from a Christian worldview.
Foundational Mathematics and Numeracy
Provides an introduction to tertiary studies in mathematics (numeracy) for training teachers. Develops the Teacher Education Student's understanding of working with number concepts and developing an understanding in children for Numeracy development in the early years. Covers programming, differentiation of the early years and primary curriculum, and developing quality learning experiences aligned with the intellectual quality domain of the Quality Teaching Framework.
Introduction to Academic Writing and Research
Prepares students for effective study at an undergraduate level. Provides an overview of multiliteracy skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and researching relevant for effective study, research, teaching practice, and ITE requirements (LANTITE). Examines utilisation of rhetoric and reasoning, effective writing and reading in Academic English, notetaking, basic citation and referencing, research skills, and professional communication.
Wellbeing and Care
Develops teacher education students' understanding of the importance of health, safety and nutrition for learning and development, and understanding issues important for the well-being of children within and outside Early Childhood and Primary School education settings. Equips beginning teachers to be pastorally responsive and develop secure and supportive relationships in safe learning environments.
Brain Development from a 21st Century Perspective
Provides students with an introduction to the field of educational neuroscience. Explores the brain's structure, development and functions and investigates how to apply this understanding to support optimal learning and wellbeing. Considers factors that influence brain development and functioning and evidence-based theory and research on the brain and learning.
Introduction to Learning Theory
Introduces students to cognitive evidence-based learning theories, highlighting their importance in effective teaching and learning design and delivery. Students explore how these theories can be applied across diverse educational contexts and with varied learner groups.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives
Empowers students to implement classroom practices responsive to and respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, identities, and perspectives. Provides an overview of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education related to policy, curriculum, and pedagogy. Presents the case for culturally responsive approaches and supportive learning environments.
Learning and Teaching through Digital Technologies
Teacher Education Students explore how new technologies can be used to support quality learning and teaching in Early Childhood Centres and in Years K-6 based on relevant pedagogical approaches. Considers the impact of technology in the classroom and society, and the application of Christian and alternate worldview frameworks on ICT in the classroom.
Praxis and Pedagogy of Play
Provides a comprehensive analysis of the theories of play and play-based pedagogies and of relevant research indicative of the importance of play in early childhood education. Contemporary curriculum is examined with emphasis on relevant approved learning frameworks and curriculum documents. Introduces a wide range of assessment and reporting techniques including documentation to enhance planning for learning.

Equips future teachers with the knowledge and skills to design differentiated learning experiences for students with special educational needs.

Yes. AC's education awards are accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and designed to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers, recognised by AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership). AC's early childhood awards are also accredited by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). This allows graduates to apply to register as teachers across all school sectors in Australia.
Yes. This course shares a common first year with the Bachelor of Education (Primary), so students can transfer into the Primary at any time during their first year of study without being required to complete additional subjects for their degree.
The course includes professional experience, with at least 20 days of ECEC Professional Experience as part of the core subjects. AC also has partnerships with over 100 Independent schools to train students, including an embedded teaching model where students learn whilst being placed in a school community with teaching schools. These partnerships greatly enhance practical learning experiences and career opportunities.
The fee is $2,579 per subject for full-fee paying students. Eligible students may access a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) at $592 per subject. FEE-HELP is also available for eligible domestic students.
Graduates can find employment in early childhood centres, schools (faith-based, government, and non-government), not-for-profit and mission-focused organisations, and community service-oriented positions. Career progression opportunities include roles such as early childhood centre manager/owner, lead teacher, year coordinator, head of curriculum, and principal. Graduates may also progress towards postgraduate studies upon completion of the degree.
