Foundations of Christian Education
A foundational subject for the Bachelor of Education programs. It introduces the philosophical and theoretical framework for the program. The historical development of schooling and education internationally and nationally are explored as well as the impact of Australian government policies and funding. This subject introduces key educational philosophers and their influence on education with a particular focus on Christian education. Students begin to develop their own personal, dynamic philosophy of teaching along with an understanding of curriculum and planning from a Christian worldview.
Foundational Mathematics and Numeracy
Provides an introduction to tertiary studies in mathematics (numeracy) for training teachers. This subject aims to develop the Teacher Education Student's (TES) understanding of working with number concepts and developing an understanding in children for Numeracy development in the early years.
Introduction to Academic Writing and Research
This subject aims to prepare students for effective study at an undergraduate level. It will provide students with an overview of the multiliteracy skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and researching relevant for effective study, research, teaching practice, and ITE requirements (LANTITE).
Wellbeing and Care
Wellbeing and Care: Health, Safety and Nutrition is designed to develop teacher education students' understanding of the importance of health, safety and nutrition for learning and development, and to understand issues that are important for the well-being of children both within and outside of the Early Childhood and Primary School education settings.
Brain Development from a 21st Century Perspective
Provides students with an introduction to the field of educational neuroscience. It explores the brain's structure, development and functions and investigates how we can apply this understanding to support optimal learning and wellbeing.
Introduction to Learning Theory
This subject introduces students to cognitive evidence-based learning theories, highlighting their importance in effective teaching and learning design and delivery. Students will explore how these theories can be applied across diverse educational contexts and with varied learner groups.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives
This subject aims to empower students to implement classroom practices responsive to, and respectful of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, identities, and perspectives. It provides an overview of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education related to policy, curriculum, and pedagogy.
Learning and Teaching through Digital Technologies
Teacher Education Students (TES) will explore how new technologies can be used to support quality learning and teaching in Early Childhood Centres and in Years K-6 based on relevant pedagogical approaches.
Inclusive Education
This subject equips future teachers with the knowledge and skills to design differentiated learning experiences for students with special educational needs. Effective assessment and evaluation strategies are examined in the context of a range of learning and teaching strategies for individuals with special educational needs.
Early Childhood and Childhood Development
This subject introduces human development with a specific focus on the period from early childhood through to preadolescence. Students will study the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of early childhood through to pre-adolescent development and consider these through a Christian Worldview lens.
The Praxis and Pedagogy of Primary
This subject provides pre-service teachers with foundational knowledge and skills in primary pedagogy and practice.
Common Questions
Yes. AC's education awards are accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). In addition, they are designed to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers and recognised by AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership). This allows graduates to apply to register as teachers across all school sectors in Australia.
You will spend at least 80 days at professional experience placements throughout your degree. You can also apply to study in one of AC's Teaching School Hub Model partner schools, which is an apprenticeship style of 'on the job' learning where a student becomes part of a local school and has a mentor teacher.
The course costs $2,579 per subject for full-fee paying students. This course is eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place — eligible students can study for as little as $592 per subject with no upfront fees via HECS-HELP.
The course takes 4 years full time and can be completed part time for up to 12 years. It consists of 32 subjects. Start dates are available in February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2).
Graduates can find employment in schools (faith-based, government and non-government schools), not-for-profit and mission-focused organisations, and community service-oriented positions. Career progression opportunities include roles such as lead teacher, year coordinator, head of curriculum, and principal. Additionally, graduates may progress towards postgraduate studies upon completion of the degree.
