The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) includes professional experience learning of 80 days (640 hours) in secondary schools. National and state-based regulatory requirements, as detailed in Faculty of Education Professional Experience Requirements, must be met prior to attending professional experience placement, and all professional experience learning days must be completed.
In the Bachelor of Arts component, students can choose a major from three options: Creative Writing, Humanities, or Social Sciences. Each major includes a research project with an academic supervisor where you can focus deeply on an area that interests you.
Yes, this course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and approved by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) for Secondary initial teacher education in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Usually, Australian teacher qualifications are recognised internationally, however, students are advised to check with potential employers and teacher registration authorities in other countries regarding overseas accreditation requirements.
International applicants must meet a minimum IELTS overall score of 7.5, with a minimum result of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules, and 7.0 in reading and writing. Alternatively, applicants may present an ISLPR score of at least 4+ in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Test results must be within two years of the date of application.
Under the Southern Cross Model, students engage in shorter, six-week unit structures designed around immersive and interactive learning experiences. Lectures are replaced with active, interactive and discussion-based learning. On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes, while the online study option may include podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes.
