You can choose from a range of teaching areas including English Education: Secondary, Mathematics Education: Secondary, Drama Education, Religious Education, and location-specific areas such as Ancient History Education (Sydney only), Modern History Education (Sydney only), Business Studies Education (Sydney only), Economics Education (Sydney only), Legal Studies Education (Sydney only), Media Studies Education (Fremantle only), Science Education (Fremantle only), and HASS Education (Fremantle only).
Students in the Bachelor of Secondary Education are required to complete a minimum of 30 weeks of practicum, comprising a 10-day observation in EDUC1040 Development and Learning, Professional Experience 2 – Secondary, Professional Experience 3 – Secondary, and Professional Engagement and Internship – Secondary in the final year.
For WA applicants with recent secondary education, the indicative ATAR/Selection Rank is 70, or an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 25. Other pathways include successful completion of 4 subjects at an undergraduate level or higher, completion of AQF Certificate IV or higher, or meeting work and life experience criteria including being at least 20 years of age and having at least two years of relevant work experience or appropriate STAT scores.
WA students require a current Working with Children Check and a National Police Clearance Check within six months of expiry. NSW students require Anaphylaxis E-training, Child Protection Awareness, DoE Consent, Mandatory Child Protection, Pre-service teacher acknowledgement, and a Working with Children Check. Both WA and NSW students must also successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before the Internship in the final year.
The Bachelor of Secondary Education is offered at two campuses: Fremantle and Sydney. The program commences in both Semester 1 and Semester 2, and is available as a 4-year full-time degree or equivalent part-time study.
