About This Course

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Design Innovation and Technologies) double degree is for aspiring educators who want to teach technologies in secondary schools. Technologies is one of the fastest growing and most innovative subject areas, and if you are interested in the latest innovations and the impact of technology on society and the environment, a career as a technology and applied studies (TAS) teacher may be for you. You learn in an industry-focused environment with access to purpose-built workshops and laboratories, with professional experience placements embedded in schools to support your skill development as a TAS teacher. The course offers a diverse range of specialisations, with additional opportunities to develop subject content knowledge in industrial technology engineering, electronics, graphics and STEM education, and prepares you to specialise and teach in areas including Design and Technology, Technology (Mandatory), Food Technology, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology (Timber and Metal, Graphics and Engineering), Computing Technology, Enterprise Computing, Software Engineering and STEM Education. Totalling 360 credit points, the degree combines 200 credit points of education study - Education Studies, Effective Teaching, Secondary Curriculum, Secondary Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment, and Core Curriculum units, plus the ACER literacy and numeracy tests for initial teacher education - with 160 credit points forming a Design and Technologies major and a Digital Technologies (Computing) minor. You complete 80 days of embedded professional experience across four Effective Teaching units, plus a community engagement unit requiring a minimum of 25 hours of direct service. Graduates are eligible for registration as secondary teachers in government, independent, Catholic and other faith-based schools.

General Requirements

Domestic students

An applicant must comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy, which includes meeting a minimum ATAR requirement and meeting the English Language Proficiency requirements.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at Year 12 level, or equivalent:
- New South Wales: Prerequisites: Nil. Assumed knowledge: a minimum of three Band 5 HSC results, including one in English. Note: this course is structured to allow applicants to meet the three Band 5 entry requirements within the degree program.
Alternatively, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants may be selected following an interview with the course adviser and staff of the campus Indigenous Higher Education Unit. They should have a minimum of three years' work experience, or completion of Year 12 or equivalent, or demonstrated relevant tertiary study skills or successful completion of a Tertiary Communication Skills program.
Indicative ATAR: 67.00 (Strathfield).
Applicants who have completed at least two units of AQF-recognised study at bachelor level or above are assigned a new selection rank reflecting study level, duration and grade point average, and may be eligible for credit or recognition of prior learning, which can shorten the course.
ACU also assesses applicants on prior VET study, and on work and life experience.

International students

International applicants need the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 Certificate and must comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy, including the English Language Proficiency requirements. International students completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (either outside or in Australia), an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 must apply for admission through their local Tertiary Admission Centre and are assessed on their performance in those studies (ATAR or equivalent). Apart from this, international applicants meet the same academic prerequisites as domestic applicants.
IELTS: a minimum score of 7.0 in Reading and Writing and a minimum of 7.5 in Listening and Speaking.
