About This Course

Gain the skills to lead learning programs outside the traditional classroom with the Bachelor of Education Studies (EBST) from Victoria University. EBST is also an alternative path into teaching. Our Bachelor of Education Studies will give you the teaching skills and knowledge to work in a number of community and private settings, including mentoring and tutoring programs, community programs, public and welfare services, after-school care, and teacher aide positions. You can steer your education-focused career into an area of personal passion, with a relevant major or minor from our broad options. Possibilities include PE/physical education (secondary), arts (music, visual arts and media), community (health, welfare, disability or psychology), English (literary studies and teaching English as an additional language), humanities (history, cultural or Indigenous studies), ICT (digital media), maths, outdoor education, and science specialisations. Please note: this course does not provide you with the prerequisites for teacher registration.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Recent secondary education (within the last 2 years): Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE or equivalent) including Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English.
VET/TAFE study: Completion of an Australian Advanced Diploma or Diploma (or equivalent); OR completion of the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (or equivalent).
Higher education study: Full or partial completion of an Australian Higher Education award (or equivalent); OR completion of a single unit of Higher Education studies; OR completion of a bridging or enabling course e.g. Foundation course or equivalent.
Work & life experience: Five years (minimum) work/life experience in Training & Development, Education, Child Care or similar; OR applicants that completed an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate more than two years ago, PLUS Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English (or equivalent).
No minimum ATAR required for this course.
English-language requirements must be met by all applicants.
Meeting the minimum entry criteria does not guarantee entry into this course.

Career Opportunities

Bachelor of Education Studies prepares you for a wide range of important work with an education focus where teacher registration is not required, including: adult education, teacher aide, care facility training and support, community programs, disability work, specialised learning programs such as arts, science or maths, recreation and sporting activities. If you continue on to our Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) or Master of Teaching (Primary Education) you'll be able to apply for school teaching positions.

Does the Bachelor of Education Studies qualify me to become a registered teacher?

No, the Bachelor of Education Studies does not provide you with the prerequisites for teacher registration. However, it is an alternative path into teaching — after graduating, you may progress to VU's Master of Teaching (Secondary) or Master of Teaching (Primary Education) to become a registered teacher, provided you meet the entry requirements.

How many credit points do I need to complete the Bachelor of Education Studies, and how is the course structured?

To attain the Bachelor of Education Studies, students are required to complete 288 credit points, consisting of: 96 credit points of First Year Core units, 48 credit points of Core studies, 48 credit points of Minor studies, and 96 credit points of Major studies.

Where will I study, and can I study at the Werribee Campus?

Domestic students can choose to study at the Werribee Campus for your first year only. After that, you will complete your course at the Footscray Park Campus.

What are the indicative fees for the Bachelor of Education Studies?

This course is offered as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) for eligible students (Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens). The indicative fee for a full-time student in 2026 is AU$4,738 per year. This is a guide only, based on a typical full-time study load, and does not include materials such as textbooks or the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

What kind of work experience will I gain during the course?

You'll gain invaluable work experience through industry placements and work-integrated learning. By the time you graduate, you'll have explored the community education sector, building your understanding and becoming work ready. VU offers a range of practical projects, including with the renowned Immigration Museum, who have worked with students to identify community learning needs in Neighbourhood Houses.
