About This Course

Adelaide University's Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) (Honours) teaches you how raw materials from the world around us can be turned into products for daily use. Drawing on engineering, chemistry, mathematics and project management, you explore the processes behind food, medicines and vaccines, clean drinking water and alternative energy sources.
Your first year gives a comprehensive introduction to general engineering principles and skills, so that whatever your prior educational experience you can excel in engineering study. Second and third year cover the fundamentals of chemical engineering: process engineering, fluid and particle mechanics, plant equipment design, reaction engineering, separation process engineering, and process dynamics and control.
Electives let you go deeper into the areas that interest you — food engineering, brewery engineering, pharmaceutical production, wastewater engineering, metallurgical processes, environmental systems and sustainability, or electrical and electronic systems.
You hone your technical skillset in purpose-built laboratories and workshops, and in the final years complete up to 12 weeks of professional placement in industry under the supervision of a qualified engineer. Professional practice topics have you work with peers to engineer a solution to a complex plant design problem, and you also complete a major honours research project, determining how laboratory results can be scaled up for commercial production.
The program totals 192 units and runs full time over four years across the Adelaide City and Mawson Lakes campuses. It is provisionally accredited at the level of Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia, with full accreditation likely following graduation of the first cohort.

• Work and life experience — Completion of an Adelaide University approved enabling, pathway or bridging program; OR A competitive result in the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT); OR Qualify for special entry.
