About This Course

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) gives a solid grounding in civil engineering knowledge and principles alongside essential professional practice skills. Civil engineers design, build and maintain the infrastructure that underpins modern life — bridges, roads, tunnels, railways, dams, airports and water channels — and the degree keeps sustainability at the centre of that work.
You study a broad range of courses drawn from civil engineering-related fields including structural, water, geotechnical and transportation engineering. First year lays the groundwork with essential engineering topics before you move into the specifics of civil engineering in second year.
Throughout the degree you sharpen your creativity and technical skillset through substantial hands-on design projects and practicals, learning how to design roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, water systems and other critical infrastructure. Electives are available in areas such as structural mechanics, environmental sustainability and geotechnical design.
In your final year you undertake a major honours research project, with industry representatives or academic researchers acting as your clients, working through the real-life stages of a project from brief to feasibility, concept development and detailed design. You also complete up to 12 weeks of professional work placements in industry.
Because first-year courses are common across engineering, you can switch specialisation and receive credit. Assessment includes reports, case studies, presentations, essays and assignments, online quizzes, examinations, research projects, laboratory and practical team-based projects, e-portfolios and reflective practice.
The program totals 192 units and runs full time across the Adelaide City and Mawson Lakes campuses. It is provisionally accredited at the level of Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia.

• Vocational Education and Training (VET) — Completion of an award from a registered training organisation (RTO) at Certificate IV (AQF level 4) or higher.
• Higher education study — Successful completion of at least 6 months full-time study (or equivalent part-time) in a higher education award program.
• Work and life experience — Completion of an Adelaide University approved enabling, pathway or bridging program; OR A competitive result in the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT); OR Qualify for special entry
