Whether you are a domestic or international applicant, you must meet the UNSW English language requirements before submitting an application. You can demonstrate that you meet the requirements through one of the following: English Language Tests and University English Courses (you must confirm with your testing authority that UNSW has permission to view and verify your test results), prior study in the medium of English, or other qualifications. If you are applying for a scholarship, you must demonstrate that you meet these requirements before the scholarship deadline.

All new candidates should enrol in their degree by the term start date. New candidates may enrol up to one month before the term start date. For 2026, key terms include: Term 1 starting 16 February 2026, Term 2 starting 1 June 2026, and Term 3 starting 14 September 2026. If you are unable to commence by the term start date, you may enrol by the term census date, but your candidature clock starts from the term start date regardless of when you enrol.

Once you have found a supervisor, held your pre-admission interview, developed a research description, and prepared your supporting documents, you are ready to lodge your application via UNSW Apply Online. Only full applications (i.e. with all required documents) will be taken to the next stage. Documents that are in a language other than English must be translated by an accredited translator (such as NAATI) before they are submitted. You may submit scanned copies of your documents with your application, but must be prepared to present original documents if requested.

Higher Degree Research (HDR) applicants can request to defer for up to one year after the initial offer term. UNSW HDR Scholarship offers may be able to be deferred on a case by case basis (check your scholarship letter for details). Deferrals are only approved where conditions are met, including continuing to meet UNSW entry requirements, and availability of supervision and resources. UNSW has three scholarship application rounds per year. For Term 2 or 3 2026, the 2025 November Release round closed on 5 September 2025 with offers released from 21 November to 5 December. For Term 1 2027, the 2026 July Release round closed on 17 April 2026 with offers released from 24 July 2026. For Term 2 or 3 2027, the 2026 November Release round closes 14 August 2026 with offers released from 19 November 2026. Applicants who have funding from an alternative source must submit their application at least eight (8) weeks before an offer of admission is required.
