Common Questions
All applicants, whether domestic or international, must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the minimum UNSW English Language Requirements. This can be demonstrated through approved English language tests (such as those administered by Pearson's), prior study in the medium of English, or other accepted qualifications.
UNSW HDR programs operate on an academic calendar comprising four terms per year: Summer Term, Term 1, Term 2, and Term 3. For 2026, Term 1 starts 16 February, Term 2 starts 1 June, Term 3 starts 14 September, and Summer Term starts 15 December 2025. New candidates are expected to enrol by the Term Start Date.
International students can fund their studies through a UNSW Research Scholarship, an alternative external scholarship or sponsorship, or through self-funding. All international applicants must complete the Financial Declaration Form and demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, overseas student health cover (OSHC), and support for any dependants for the duration of their studies.
Scholarship deadlines vary by round. For international applicants, the 2026 November Release (for Term 2 or 3 2026 start) closed on 5 September 2025, with offers released from 21 November–5 December. The 2026 July Release (for Term 1 2027 start) closed on 17 April 2026. The 2026 November Release (for Term 2 or 3 2027 start) closes 14 August 2026. Applicants with alternative funding must submit their full application at least eight weeks before an offer of admission is required.
Yes, HDR applicants can request to defer for up to one year after the initial offer term. UNSW HDR Scholarship offers may be deferred on a case-by-case basis, subject to the conditions outlined in the scholarship letter. Deferrals are only approved where conditions are met, including continuing to meet UNSW entry requirements and availability of supervision and resources. If you have a conditional offer, email domestic.grs@unsw.edu.au or international.grs@unsw.edu.au; if you have an unconditional offer, log in to Accept Online.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
