Common Questions
Yes, the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)/Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which means the degree is internationally recognised and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world. Graduates are also eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.
Students and graduates may be eligible to become members of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), the peak professional body for designers in Australia, where students are eligible for student membership and access to DIA member resources throughout their studies. They may also join the International Interaction Design Association (IxDA). Additionally, there are numerous local and international professional organisations that promote and support industrial designers in sub-disciplinary and specialist fields including lighting design, furniture design, design management and service design.
In the first two years, you'll study basic mechanical engineering and industrial design courses. You will be exposed to the fundamentals of engineering sciences, mathematics, engineering design, and engineering professional practice, aimed at developing competence in essential analytical problem-solving skills and design capabilities. You'll also gain a basic understanding of the methods and nature of the designed form, and learn about the socio-cultural factors of design and designing. All engineering students will also study an Introduction to Engineering course, incorporating a humanitarian-focused Engineers Without Borders Challenge.
RMIT offers a range of opportunities for students to study abroad through overseas work, exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to undertake a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 2, 3 or 4 to ensure they graduate job-ready.
Your final-year (capstone) project will develop and reinforce the skills and knowledge you need — as defined by Engineers Australia — to commence your professional engineering career. This experience acts as a scaffold for entry into the profession and opens up opportunities beyond graduation. You will be provided with the challenge of defining and demonstrating an area of professional engagement through a year-long, research-led and industry-engaged design project. You may also have the opportunity to present your project at EnGenius, an end of year student showcase event.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
