About This Course

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) provides a solid grounding in the core knowledge, principles, and technical and professional skills essential to mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers design, build and maintain the systems that power cars, aircraft, robots and wind turbines, and work at any stage of a system's lifecycle from conception through to phase-out.
Core courses cover the building blocks of mechanical design: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, vibration, control and thermodynamics. Your first year gives a comprehensive introduction to general engineering principles and skills, and from second year you move into the fundamentals — solid mechanics, dynamics, mechanical engineering practice, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, acoustics and vibrations, control systems, manufacturing processes and computer-aided design.
In fourth year you choose from a wide range of electives, keeping your options broad or focusing on areas such as biomechanical engineering, advanced composite materials, humanitarian engineering, net-zero transitions or renewable energy systems.
The degree is strongly hands-on. Professional practice topics include design-and-build group projects where you engineer a solution to a complex problem with your peers, and you complete up to 450 hours of work experience in industry under the supervision of a qualified engineer, plus a major industry research project.
Because first-year engineering courses are common, you can switch specialisation. Assessment combines reports, case studies, presentations, essays and assignments, online quizzes, examinations, research projects, laboratory and practical team-based projects, e-portfolios and reflective practice.
The program totals 192 units and runs full time across the Adelaide City and Mawson Lakes campuses. It is provisionally accredited at the level of Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia.
