Common Questions
To be considered for admission, you need to have completed a bachelor degree or higher (or a major) in a related discipline with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65 in third year units, or where relevant, final year units. You must also meet English language proficiency requirements, such as an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0, or a VCE English study score of at least 30 in EAL or 25 in English other than EAL. Additionally, you must identify a project and secure a supervisor before applying.
Before applying, you must review the projects booklet on the honours in life and environmental sciences page to find a project that interests you. Once you've chosen a project, contact the project supervisor to discuss it and obtain their written (email) agreement to supervise you. You may also contact the Honours Campus Coordinator to discuss your own project proposal and identify a potential supervisor. After agreeing on a project, you complete the honours application form and submit it through the Deakin applicant portal. Direct applications for Semester 2 2026 close 15 June 2026.
To complete the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours), you must pass 8 credit points. This includes the 0-credit-point compulsory unit DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, 6 credit points of research units (SLE440, SLE441, SLE442, SLE443), and 2 credit points of coursework units (SLE451 Science Professionalism and SLE452 Research Design and Data Analysis). As a full-time student, you will study four credit points per semester across two semesters per year.
The estimated tuition fee for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is $8,848 for one year full-time (HECS). This is provided as a guide only and represents typical first-year tuition fees. The actual cost will vary depending on the units you choose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course, and any approved Recognition of Prior Learning.
The Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) broadens your career options and provides specialised knowledge and experience. Graduates can pursue roles such as coastal project officer, climate change campaigner, ecologist, fisheries officer, laboratory scientist, park ranger or manager, marine biologist, museum curator, sustainability consultant, and zoo biologist. The degree is also an ideal pathway to further study and research training, including masters and PhD programs. Membership to the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) is also open to graduates.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
